SOCIETY GARLIC
Tulbaghia violacea
Society Garlic is a clump-forming perennial with dark green leaves,
growing from bulb like corms which readily multiply. As a pot plant
the leaves are shorter in length usually around 9-12", but as a Landscape
Specimen Plant the leaves can get 18-24" long. Society Garlic grows best
in a light fertile potting or Garden soil that is well drained, Full sun but
will also do very good in some afternoon light shaded areas.
Society garlic can withstand droughts very well, but keeping moist will help
in the division of the corms and better flowering. Flowering is continous thru
early spring to late fall. The flower stems will extend above the foilage
12" or more and will have anywhere from 8-12 small 1" Tubular star shaped
flowers, that are pink-Lilac in color, and are very fragrant.
USDA Zones 7 - 10. Society garlic tolerates moderate frosts and light
freezes down to 20F or so. For other zones planting is a 12" round container
for a specimen plant is recommended.
Growing Plugs has become a new source for some growers that do
only the growing ( propagation ) of the plugs, these can be then 'Cold
Treated' putting the Plugs in sort of Suspended Growth for later sales.
Why buying plugs are cost effiecent, due to the higher survival rate
of using plugs, you can get a nice healthy grown plant in a very short
timeframe, ranging from 6 - 12 weeks average.
