The Comprehensive Music Instructor for Band -- Listen, Move, Sing, and Play
by James O. Froseth
The Comprehensive Music Instructor:
- Helps students develop good habits.
- Implements a comprehensive and performance-based sequential music learning curriculum. The teacher's score and planning guide comes complete with detailed lesson plans.
- Provides checklists to help parents supervise home practice.
- Incorporates listening activities to develop musical concepts and aural skills; rhythmic movement activities to develop kinesthetic feeling for steady tempo, meter, and melodic rhythm; and vocal activities to develop a sense of pitch, intonation, musical phrasing, and style of articulation.
- Includes both ear-training and eye-training activities. Students learn to play what they hear and hear what they see.
- Motivates students to learn through self-initiated and self-directed study. "Students learn best what they want and need to learn."
- Utilizes a broad spectrum of educational media. Printed texts form the core.
James O. Froseth is Professor Emeritus, Former Chair of the Graduate Committee and Doctoral Advisor for the Music Education Department at the University of Michigan (1984-1999). He is a pioneer in teaching beginning instrumentalists.
Dr. Froseth is a leader in the study of music teacher education, in particular, as an advocate of nonverbal modes of music teaching and performance-based assessment of music learning. Recent efforts have been directed to the research and development of procedures for music teacher self-assessment and to the integration of creative musicianship into music curricula at all levels. His most recent publications are titled Do It! Play Recorder and Do It! Play in Band, a series of texts and CDs that feature artist models of beginning level music repertoire with musical accompaniments set in historical and contemporary musical styles by professional studio musicians.
Professor Froseth presents numerous clinics, workshops, and seminars in the U.S. and overseas each year. A member of the University of Michigan faculty since 1971, he taught previously at The University of Wisconsin-Madison, The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Kenosha (Wisconsin) public schools. He hods degrees from The University of Michigan (B.M.), the University of Wisconsin (M.M.), and the University of Iowa (Ph.D.). James Froseth is listed on the John Philip Sousa Foundation Historic Roll of Honor of High School Concert Bands for his service at the Mary D. Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin (1959-1965).
