This book has 128 black & white photographs in 66 pages showing details outside as well as a chapter showing the cab interior.

In 1943, production for World War Two had taken its toll on innovation in the railroad industry because the production facilities involved in making the large diesel engines that the railroads wanted to replace their steam locos with were instead used in submarines and other military applications. The diesel motor manufacturers were running at full speed and still not making enough, so many roads that may have dieselized earlier kept placing orders for steam locomotives.

The order for these locomotives from ALCO (American Locomotive Company) were built in their Schenectady, NY shops and were delivered to the C&O for use in coal drag service on smaller branches where the 2-6-6-6 and 2-6-6-2 locos were not necessary.

These locos were equipped with all of the most modern appliances and fixtures including superheaters and roller bearings. The 69” drivers on them made them the perfect blend of power for coal drags as well as the speed necessary for passenger trains where some ended up serving as well.

By 1957 they had outlived their usefulness as compared to the diesels which were then easily available so the last of the class was retired after 14 years service.

The book is formatted with full color heavy weight paper covers and a spiral binding for the enjoyment of modelers and historians as well as railfans.
