This is a RARE C1820-40 Red Printed Cotton Handkerchief THE HISTORY OF BIRDS IN GENERAL measuring 14 1/4"" x 11 1/4" and may be of American or English origin. It is a light weight cotton instructional handkerchief of various kinds of birds including one bird called a Bustard and another a Lapwing. Other birds include Hummingbird, Dove, Eagle, Parrot, Swan,Parrot, Ostrich, Pigeon, Hen, Goose, Pelican, Lark, Stork, Woodcock, Owl, Duck, Peacock, Sparrow, Raven, Wren, and Starling It is a very early printed handkerchief. and includes information about each kind of bird in simple rhyming verse form along the top and bottom. The border is a simple stylized floral. Three sides have a very narrow handstitched hem and the other is a selvage. The top right corner has an old 3" vertical mended repair with a weak area there as well. The top left section has aged yellow from being the section exposed to the air and light while being folded and stored. There are several holes and thin spots. R.T. Bailey? is signed in ink in the lower right hand corner. The fabric may be hand woven cotton.
