Circa 1895-1900 sepia tone cabinet photo of twelve men. Image size is 5 1/2" by 9 1/2". The image is matted and framed in its original 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" wooden frame. Of course I had to open up the back of the frame to see if there was any kind of notation on the inside. There is not- just the photograph on unmarked photographers mat. When I disturbed the paper dust cover on the back of the frame, I preserved the framer's label and have glued it to the fresh paper I put on. The framer's label is a colorful artist palette-shaped sticker that reads LADEVEZE'S ART STORE, 105-109 CONGRESS ST. WEST, SAVANNAH, GA, ARTISTIC FRAMING A SPECIALTY. In the early 1890's Charles Ladeveze(a mulatto descendant of Haitian refugees) moved his family( wife from Georgia and three children) and art store business from Augusta to Savannah, Georgia. The family moved from Savannah to Rhode Island around 1905. The label proves that this IS the original framing for this photo and it narrows the window of time for the photo's creation. So who were these twelve men? They are formally dressed. Were they part of a business? City officials? Or perhaps they were jurymen of a big trial in Savannah. Its a handsome photo- not faded and with crisp focus. Good frame with only slight wear.
