In the late 1970’s, John Cutler of Hard Truckers Electronics designed and hand built a guitar preamplifier for Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger” guitar. John went on to become the Grateful Dead’s head technician and eventually, Recording Engineer and Soundman.
In August of 1990, at John’s request, CAE Sound was given the task of handcrafting another preamp and that became the CB1 we offer today. The CB1 preamp buffers the output of the guitar pickup and gives the low impedance drive necessary to send the proper signal to your effects pedals. This low impedance signal avoids tone loss due to the capacitance of the guitar cable.
The CB1 Buffer Preamplifier is installed just before the output jack and is "in circuit" at all times. The preamp is powered on/off by simply plugging a cord into the guitar output jack.
Now, every guitar player can take advantage of the advanced technology used by touring and recording professionals worldwide.

CB1 wiring - Standard
The wiring of the CB1 is very straight forward. It has 4 wires that are hooked up post volume control. The white wire is the input to the preamp and attaches to the output of the volume control. The yellow wire is the output of the Preamp and goes to the output jack. The black wire is the ground lead and should be tied to the ground. The battery red wire is connected directly to the PC board and the battery black wire is used to turn the preamp on, and is connected to the ring terminal of the output jack. A schematic diagram is included with every CB1 kit.
