Lord Strathcona’s Horse and the Royal Canadian Dragoons sailed for England with the first Canadian Contingent as a combined composite cavalry regiment. Due to heavy losses by the 1st Canadian Division in the 2nd battle of Ypres the unit volunteered to serve as infantry with the 1st Canadian Division until being withdrawn on the formation of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade at the end of 1915. This being attached to the British Cavalry Corps for the duration of the war.
