Splendid antiquarian edition of notable work by Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), Scottish-born
British historian and essayist who was leading figure in the Victorian era.
Carlyle opposed analytic reasoning and quasi-scientific treatment of social
questions by the rationalist political economists, and advocated the more
emotional and intuitive approach of the 18th and 19th century German thinkers
like Richter and Goethe. This work, like most of Carlyle's writing, challenges
the boundaries between genres by blending the essay and fiction, poetry and
history, in an exuberant and provocative depiction of the revolution.
The volume is in excellent condition, with tight binding and secure & undamaged hinges. Mild scuffing to spine label, else fine. Leather is whole and supple. Internally complete and clean, with hint of spotting to free fly leaves; text is spotless. Gilt logos to boards and sticker to frontal pastedown from the Edinburgh Academy. Solid, heavier tome. No reserve.
