Finishing Recommendations for Arboria Western Red Cedar Structures:If you prefer a natural look, let the cedar weather to a silvery gray color. To maintain the warm color of unweathered cedar, apply a coat of semi-transparent stain in "natural cedar" tone, available in most major brands. No clear varnish, oil or water-repellent will prevent color change as the cedar weathers. The sun's ultra-violet rays will penetrate and soon darken the wood. For a painted finish we recommend a solvent-based primer and compatible second coat. Painting prior to assembly will result in better coverage and an easier paint job. Wood left unfinished in the weather even for a short time will develop water-stain marks. If this happens, seal your structure with a coat of shellac before painting to prevent the water marks from "bleeding" and showing through the paint coat. The life of your stain or paint finish will depend upon weather exposure and the quality of the finish product and application. For best results, follow the advice of a good paint dealer.
