Many of you may not realize that Dr. Harry Begian, the longtime legendary conductor
of the University of Illinois Symphonic Band, had achieved another legendary legacy
as the conductor of the elite Cass Tech Symphony Band, between 1947 and 1964.
This high school band earned a reputation for superior performances, establishing a program
of the highest caliber that continues today. These historic recordings, most of which were
recorded live in concert, are incredible listening experiences, and include saxophone viruoso
Donald Sinta performing the solo part in Alfred Reed's Ballade. Sinta was a first-chair
saxophone player in the Cass Tech Band in the 1950s, and was in his mid-20s when he
returned as a guest soloist here. The other featured soloists are found in the horn trio
performing Horns-a-Hunting: Darrel Barnes, Robert Barnes, and Mark Shafarman. The
Barnes brothers went on to become violists in the Philadelphia Orchestra and Boston Symphony.

The Cass Tech Symphony Band was accustomed to playing before large audiences,
numbering between 1500 to 3000, often to standing ovations.

Brimming with historic significance, this is truly an album to treasure!
