Synopsis
In this dual portrait of power and personality, historian Robert Dallek probes deeply into the relationship between President Richard M. Nixon and his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, drawing on hitherto unavailable tapes and documents to reveal an odd couple that made history. Though Dallek finds striking similarities in their lives, Kissinger and Nixon would never have been friends in the real world; and Dallek cites many examples of the cruel and base ways in which they referred to one another. But somehow, due to time and circumstance, they complemented, and sometimes relied on, each other. Nixon and Kissinger wielded enormous power and, in their case, the sum was greater than the parts. Dallek revisits the key historical events in this revealing and worthwhile take on the Kissinger/Nixon era.
