It was the year of America's bicentennial celebration, but on 1976's THE ROYAL SCAM, Steely Dan masterminds Fagen and Becker did not share in the exultant spirit of the times. The title track--a vision of fallen America from the point of view of immigrants--has a mock-celebratory chorus: "See the glory of the Royal Scam," which typifies SCAM's heartfelt cynicism. In their next two releases (their last), Steely Dan's sound would smoothen and incorporate less rock. This is perhaps their darkest record, and for a band known for its arch mixture of L.A. cool and ennui, that's saying something.
Guitar heroes were roundly worshipped in the '70s, and two of the record's standout tracks, "Kid Charlemagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive," feature incendiary axe work by Larry Carlton. Interestingly, both glorify outsiders: The former tells the story of legendary drug chemist Owsley Stanley, and the latter is a first-person account of a murderer on the lam. Other highlights: the crisp "Green Earrings" the lounge-chair funk of "Haitian Divorce" and the inscrutable "Fez," whose principal lyric is "I'm never gonna do it without the fez on/don't make me do it without the fez on."

Editorial reviews
4 stars out of 5 - ...Sleek, smart, deliciously cynical....Sounding like a million dollars and crammed with the low-life tales...[it] instantly raised the standard for sophisticated quirkiness...
Q  (06/01/2000)

5 stars out of 5 - Fagen and Becker assembled a talent pool composed primarily of jazz specialists who showed they could rock and swing all at once when so inspired.

AN EXPLANATION OF MY SHIPPING/HANDLING CHARGES.

I had a recent enquiry as to my shipping prices from someone in the US who had bought a double cd from me and was upset that there was a $6.00 difference in the price that was paid for shipping and the actual amount shown on the package.  The following was the response that I emailed this person.  I hope that this will help you understand the nature of this business.

Thankyou for contacting me and allowing me to explain myself.

My cost for the cd that you purchased is $12.55. I charged you $8.00 to deliver it to you. I did most of that delivery work myself, not like most vendors who just drop it in the mail. I actually drive 3 hours return from my home just east of Ottawa, Canada to Ogdensburg, New York to deliver the cd across the border so it will be in your hands faster than any mail service Canada offers.
Because of this action, there is no delay at customs and it usually arrives within 3 days. Unfortunately, there are people on ebay who charge rediculously high shipping rates and do nothing, which has cause(d) ebay to crack down, but I am not one of them. If I am more a delivery service than a seller of cds so be it. I have to make a living somehow.

After all the costs that ebay heeps on me and the expense of delivering it to you, and the current exchange rate, I barely make $2.00 on your purchase. I have to sell alot of cds to make a living. Please consider what I have said and let me know what you think I should do to continue providing inexpensive cds to you and others. I look forward to your response.

Kind regards,
Patrick

This person suggested I post this exactly as was written which I have done.

I drive down to the US once a week so if you need your item for a certain time be sure to let me know.  I will tell you when the next delivery date is and when you can expect your item.  If you are in Canada, I deliver every other day.

Thankyou for reading this.
