Sapphire belongs to the corundum group, which also includes Ruby.  Sapphire is the official birthstone for the month of September as adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. It is also the birth stones for the Zodiac signs of Pisces, Taurus, Virgo and Sagittarius.

Some sapphires exhibit an optical property known as asterism. These magnificent gems display a sharp six-rayed star which seems to glide magically across the surface of the gem when the latter is moved. The star is best visible when the star sapphire is seen in a single light source such as sunlight and spotlight.

Star-effect or "asterism" is caused by the inclusions of tiny fibers of rutile (also known as "silk").  The stars are caused by the light reflecting from needle-like inclusions of rutile aligned perpendicular to the rays of the star.
