APOTHECARY CABINET LILLICH'S PHARMACY DUNDALK MD

Up for sale is an APOTHECARY CABINET from LILLICH'S PHARMACY in DUNDALK, MD. This cabinet was used in the 30s, 40s and 50s for sure but we do not now how much earlier or later it was used. We have found dates written on the side of the drawers to correspond with this. The cabinet has solid wood construction and plywood drawers. The entire cabinet has been finish in a dark cherry stain. The cabinet features privacy glass panels on the doors, an open back design and six free floating exchangeable drawers. We presume with the open back design this cabinet was mounted or bracketed to a wall above a counter or work area. The cabinet does free stand on a level surface but is top considering the design and glass in the doors. The cabinet measures 57”T x 24”W x 7”D overall. The area of the two doors is 34 1/2”T x 23 1/2” W. Each piece of glass is intact and presumably original. The left door has a latch at the bottom to hold the door in place. The right door has an outside knob latch and lock with key as shown. Each door has 5 shelves on the inside with small dowels to prevent items from falling off. There are 4 shelves inside not including the bottom. Please note that the upper left hinge and lower right hinge are missing pins. We have inserted paper clips as shown to avoid the doors from opening abruptly and causing damage to the intact hinges. The seller acquired the cabinet this way and has never attempted to look for replacements. On the inside of the right “leg” of the cabinet, there are two screws where something must have hung from during its usage.

The six pullout drawers are perhaps the most interesting part of this cabinet and provide a partial history of its usage. Each drawer measures 6 1/2”D x 3 3/4"W x 2 3/4”T and together they span 22 1/2" across the cabinet. They are held from going past the drawer by a wood stop along the back edge. Each drawer is made of plywood with a screw on metal pull. There is a good amount of tarnish and wear on each pull but we believe it to be a pewter colored metal that was painted over to match. Each drawer has writing on each side and some have writing on the back. The writing appears to be various dates, stock numbers, drug names, dosages and prices. We have found dates that range from 1935-1957 which is how we arrived at our dates in the beginning. On one of the cabinets is an original Lillich’s Prescription Pharmacy sticker with some drug names typed onto it. The sticker also shows the switchboard number 500 in Dundalk, Maryland. From our research we can tell you that Dennis Paul (Doc) Lillich founded the pharmacy in the Dundalk Village in the 1920s. Based on the dates on the drawers there is a possibility this is a fixture from the beginning of the pharmacy’s operation.

Please view all of the pictures we have provided. This cabinet was actively used and it does reflect this in the wear. There is wear to the dark finish throughout the piece inside and out. There is a small chip to the wood at the bottom of the left “leg”. On the front of the piece there are several marks where tape was affixed to the piece for notes. There is also a group of white marks on the right hand door to the right of the glass.

Whether you just replace the hinge pins and keep it in its current condition or restore it, this apothecary cabinet is a great piece of history. Don’t miss out on this fantastic cabinet!

We are often asked who can ship large items. Here are some suggestions of shipping websites you can go to:

  • uship.com – a site that has shippers bid on your delivery
  • freightquote.com – helps you find the lowest price on LTL deliveries

  • youcrate.com – ships in a protective plastic crate (alternative to crating)

If you would like us to see if we can get a quote with one of these options please contact us and include your city and zip code.
