MARC CHAGALL "WINDOWS FOR JERUSALEM" ~ One of the 20th century's great works of art ~ TWO ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS BY MOURLOT RARE 1963 FRENCH PUBLICATION ANDRE SAURET, MONTE CARLO PLUS
12 EXCITING OFF-SET LITHOGRAPHS OF THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS CHAGALL CREATED FOR THE HADASSAH-HEBREW MEDICAL CENTER IN JERUSALEM history Created in France by Chagall, it was felt these glorious works of art should be displayed there and also in the United States, the land in which they were commissioned. Thus, on June 16, 1961, the Louvre exhibited these 12 beautifully rich pieces of art in a specially constructed pavilion. Throughout the summer, hundreds of thousands of visitors hailed Chagall's work as a great and towering achievement. At the close of the exhibition, the windows were carefully crated and flown to New York City's Museum of Modern Art where they were displayed from November 19, 1961 through January 3, 1962. At the end of the American exhibition, each of the 12 pieces was again carefully crated and flown to Jerusalem. "On February 6, 1962, in the presence of a distinguished and notable gathering, the twelve stained-glass windows designed and created by Marc Chagall for the synagogue of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center at Kiryat Hadassah, Jerusalem, were formally installed and dedicated. Marc Chagall, the guest of honor speaking on that day, said: 'How is it that the air and earth of Vitebsk, my birthplace, and of thousands of years of exile, find themselves mingled in the air and earth of Jerusalem? How could I have thought that not only my hands with their colors would direct me in my work, but that the poor hands of my parents and of others and still others with their mute lips and their closed eyes, who gathered and whispered behind me, would direct me as if tHey also wished to take part in my life?' "He ended by saying that he was bringing 'this modest gift to the Jewish people -- to that Jewish people which always dreamt of biblical love, of friendship and peace among all peoples.... I have concluded two years of labor creating these twelve stained-glass windows. My hope is that the synagogue will overflow with harmony even as I have prayed.'" *** This 6.50" x 8.50" softcover book has its original Mourlot lithographic wraps, is in NEAR MINT CONDITION.
