"More than 25 years ago I had commissioned Marc Chagall to illustrate a limited edition of the Haggadah for Passover.  Midway through his work he said to me, and my editor at that time, 'Why don't we illustrate the entire story of the Exodus instead of the more limited story of the Passover.'  Of course I agreed since the biblical story of the Exodus liberating the Hebrew slaves from bondage had the same universal meaning today as it did several millena ago.

Nevertheless, the cry for Chagall's illustrations of the Haggadah had not subsided.  Consequently, even though there are several illustrations of the Exodus pertinent to the story of the Passover missing, my staff and I have decided to publish in a popular edition and use all of Chagall's illustrations of the Stoy of the Exodus with the Passover text.
