This 1914 Richter’s History and Records of Baseball is signed and inscribed by Francis C. Richter to Charles Comiskey, Major League Baseball player and owner of the Chicago White Sox. The book comes in a case that is personalized as “Charles Comiskey’s Copy” at the bottom of the spine.
This book is one of the few key historical baseball volumes that is considered essential for any great baseball library. Richter, who was also founder and editor of The Sporting Life, chronicles the rich history of the game from its origins to the time this book was written in 1914.
Charles Comiskey (1859-1931) was a key component in the formation of the American League. Chicago’s baseball stadium, Comiskey Park, was built under his guidance and named after him. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.
Inscription to Comiskey reads, “To Charles Comiskey, my dear old friend whose achievements fill many pages in this history. May he live many more years to enjoy the fruits of his long and arduous labors on behalf of our mutual game. Francis C. Richter. Philadelphia, PA. March 10, 1914.”
The book, which contains 306 pages, is filled with dozens of pages of pictures, on single-side plates.
Book’s covers show wear and use, with staining on front cover, top and bottom edges of spine frayed, and minor soiling on some interior pages. Obviously, the book was well-used by Comiskey. Case is in like-new condition.
