CHARLES NÈGRE (1820-1880) was one of the pioneers of photography in France and one of the earliest and greatest practitioners of photography as a fine art. A history painter by training, and acclaimed at Salon after Salon, Nègre became involved in photography soon after the perfection of various techniques that would dominate the rest of the nineteenth century. Shifting from the harsh glitter of daguerreotypes to the warm subtleties of salted paper prints, and bringing all his experience of more traditional art forms to bear on his work, he created hundreds of photographs remarkable for their' beauty innovation, and technical ingenuity. Inventing, among other things, a lens for near-instantaneous "snap-shots," and an - important, if controversial, early photogravure process, Nègre also anticipated by more than a hundred years André Malraux's, concept of a "museum without walls" in many proposals and projects calling for the, photographic documentation of works of art and other artifacts of the history of civilization.

James Borcoman, who studied under Nathan Lyons and Beaumont Newhall, is Curator of Photographs at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
