Played on an expanded 12 x 12 square board, Shuuro allows players to choose the components of their armies — composed of standard chess pieces — and then commence an epic battle across an enhanced chess landscape.

The game is played just like chess — nothing new to learn in that! — but adds the variability of large, selected armies, playing around an enhanced board.

And the quality of the set is excellent! Everything — from the game's sturdy case, to the large glossy instruction book, to the firm unfolding board, down to the solid tournament form chessmen — are made with enjoyment of play and durability in mind.

HOW DO YOU PLAY IT?

Simply follow the set-up instructions in the booklet; then proceed just like a regular chess game. That simple!
You will begin by selecting your army. With 800 points to 'spend' on pieces, you may end up with a 'balanced' army similar to a normal chess array (but with more of everything!) or you may go off on a strategy with up to 3 queens — or up to 9 knights or bishops! You're array is entirely up to you, but your final army will be theoretically equal in power to the army of your opponent.

Next, you'll use the dice to randomly place 8 obstacles, cubes known as 'plinths', on the board. These obstacles create an interesting landscape for your pieces to operate around.

Then, you'll be taking turns placing your pieces on the back ranks, strategizing your starting position one piece at a time.

And finally — PLAY CHESS! You'll use all of the strategies and intuitions of chess play on this marvelously altered environment. Freed from the confines of the normal 8 by 8 chess board, with its symmetrical armies, your chess skills will have you flying across a standard board. You'll be forming strategies and combinations you never dreamed possible in a standard chess game. 

A HIGH QUALITY SET

Several steps beyond the quality of a standard board game, this set is built to last, and to give the player a rich, absorbing feeling as the game is played.
The pieces are of solid plastic, with felted bottoms, the same form as standard tournament pieces, but reduced in size so that they fit perfectly on the board.

The sturdy board folds out to a 19 inch square. It has a normal 8 x 8 chess board on the reverse side (just in case you ever want to play regular old chess again). Notice the tastefully toned squares of the board, and how pleasantly they set off the blue and red pieces.

Finally, dice and cubes are included. The dice are used to randomly place the cubes on the board (explained in the rules, of course), and the cubes sit on the board throughout the game adding variation and strategic interest to the 'landscape' of the battlefield.

MULTILINGUAL LARGE, GLOSSY INSTRUCTION BOOKLET

The instruction booklet gives the rules in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.
It also includes the official rules of chess, in each of those languages.
The impressive 11 by 11 inch booklet has the rules of Shuuro laid out as a 2-page spread, in each language.
