LITTLE GIRL WITH BIG DOG AND BIRDS

Charles Allerton & Sons
Staffordshire England
c. 1890

This  is a wonderful child's transferware teapot, circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea service, the little eight-sided octagonal pot stands about 5 1/2" tall to the top of the finial with a square applied handle.

The decoration is transfer printed in a bright sky blue. The piece depicts a little girl, named Mae or May, standing with her arms around a huge dog. Little May is wearing a big hat and the dog appears to be smiling. This endearing scene, framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies, repeats on each side of the teapot.

It is marked with pattern number 766 and registration number 69456, registered by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The pattern is known as "Little Mae with Dog" or "Girl with Dog".

The teapot is in great condition with no cracks, repairs or chips, except for a fleabite sized nibble on the underside of the spout. A few dots of stray paint and minor transfer imperfections, typical of these early wares and original to the making. Fine overall crazing consistent with age. Offered as is, the teapot displays beautifully, a great example of naive and whimsical early wares!

Children's aesthetic transferware in this fun pattern is highly sought after, and animal lovers love it. We have also listed a matching plate and companion bowls in other early Allerton child's transferware to mix and match. We have alot more in stock  in mint condition that we will be pleased to make available upon request. We are always happy to combine shipping of multiple purchases.
