This attractive Qingbai Proto Porcelain Granary was made during the Song Dynasty . It is fairly "heavily-potted" and coated inside and out in a finely-crackled translucent green Qingbai-type glaze. The lid is incised to give it the appearance of a tiled roof. The glaze is exceptionally well preserved. On much of the surface are lightly "etched" patterns made by ancient root/plant growth during its long burial; a very pleasing effect and good evidence of its age. There were many kilns active in the South of China during the Song and Yuan dynasty producing the highly esteemed bluish white Qingbai glazed wares that immediately preceded true 'porcelain' in the Chinese ceramic history. The best and most well-known were located in Hutian, a small village just outside the city of Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province. We are happy for the new owner to check this ceramic for Thermoluminescence Testing in any reputable centre in the world, and are promising to offer a full refund if this antiquity proves to be anything other than 100% authentic. This is a Very Rare and Fantastic ancient Chinese Song Porcelain example.
Qingbai , Chinese Song Dynasty name meaning "blue white". Qingbai was developed at the Xinping kilns early in the Northern Song dynasty. During the Jingde (1004-07) period, Xinping was renamed to Jingdezhen meaning "Jingde's marketplace". Popular from the late 10th century up until the Yuan dynasty. Essentially a folk porcelain but sometimes referred to as Rao yu = "Jade from Rao", Rao zhou being the name of the administrative area in which Xinping were situated. The bluish tone comes from iron impurities in the glaze. The special characteristic comes from the body, which is natural porcelain clay, and its glaze, which is made by diluting in water the porcelain body material mixed with lime. Qingbai made its way all over China and were exported to other localities in Asia and as far away as Africa. Qingbai was developed in Jiangxi province (Jingdezhen/Hutian area) and production is archaeologically confirmed in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui and Henan provinces, but none really seems to have been able to equal the Hutian wares in quality. Recent antique dealer's name is Yingqing (Shadow Blue).
History :
After the fall of the Tang Dynasty, a period of unrest and war ensued. The foundation of the Northern Song Dynasty in 960 A.D. and the political unification that followed brought these chaotic times to an end. The Song era is considered the third great cultural flourashing of Chinese civilization. Many of the aesthetic elements that now characterize Chinese landscape painting were first developed during the Song age. Traditional text were reanalyzed and reinterpreted, bringing forth a revival of Confucianism peppered with new ideas. The centralized bureaucratic system of the Song replaced the heriditary aristocratic order that had become entrenched. In 1125 A.D., the Jurchen, a seminomadic people from the north, invaded Song China, captured their captial city, and established a dynasty of their own, the Jin, in the north. The Song court fled south to Hangzhou where they reestablished the Southern Song Dynasty that would continue to rule for another 120 years. The Song viewed themselves as the culmination of two thousand years of Chinese culture. It is during the Southern Song period when ceramic production in particular reached the height of elegance and technical perfection. Foreign trade fuled much of the growth of the Southern Song. The Song court had a voracious appetite for luxury goods imported from abroad, especially spices from the East Indies. However, splinters began to emerge among the various ethnic groups that had been unified under the Tang. As these ethnic rivalries grew, the government became fractured after officials began to oppose each other. Left in this weakened state, the Song Dynasty eventually collapsed after the Mongols invaded and conquered their territory in 1279 A.D.
TL CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY :
Buyer may request our items TL tested (thermo luminescence) for items in our Hong Kong distribution point. We are not responsible for the testing expenses.
A TL-test could be made on all kinds of fired pottery such as earthenware, stoneware as well as true porcelain. Even antique bronzes could be dated this way provided they are made with a clay core which is sometimes the case.
TL is short for "Thermoluminescence test" which is scientific method of calculating the age of antiques. It was developed in the 1960's at Oxford University in England. Technically a small sample is taken from the object and heated up in a laboratory. During this heating a faint "blue light" is emitted and mesaured which depending on the amount emitted gives an estimate on how much time that has passed since the object was last fired.
The sample should be taken only by an experienced technician from the company who will do the actual test. The holes made in the piece are the size of a pencil lead and does not distract from the value of a pottery piece if the test is properly documented (and the results are positive regarding its authenticity :-).
A TL-test should only be expected to tell whether a piece is "antique or new". Typically, the test is able to measure the time that has passed since the object was last fired to within plus or minus 30 percent of the actual time span, depending on the type of clay and the testing method used. A test report for a pottery object created 1,000 years ago will thus only indicate a likely date for its last firing as 1,000 years ago +/- 300 years.

To all Ebay Users : Whether you buy your antiquities from us or other ebay sellers we strongly recommend that you show all your purchases to your nearest reputable state museum for authentication and peace of mind. Unfortunately the ancient art market is cursed with a high proportion of fakes. Fakes often look better than real antiquities to the inexperienced eye - they are often intact, invariably unrestored and their colours are more vivid. Our buyers can count on a 100% money back guarantee if a state museum judges their purchase to be non-ancient. Seek the same re-assurance from all those who sell to you.
By the way, We made this a Private Auction so that bidder's e-mail addresses would not show up on the item page, thereby sparing those good bidders of the ceaseless efforts of spammers to "mine" eBay's pages for fresh names (there are programs called "bots" that automatically pull addresses from web pages) - this way, your e-mail address does not show up on the page and you will get less spam .
Return Policy : If item arrived not as described , we will issue a full refund . Full refund will be issued if the item is returned and must be received in their original condition .
