Sumptuous fabrics, colors, quality – it’s all here in this rare fine quilt.

The stars are pieced of two different chintzes and a linen toile. The chintzes still have the original glaze (see photo)

The stars are pieced of a square set on point with triangles attached to represent the star points. There are various names for this pattern such as LeMoyne Star or Star of the East.

The pieced stars alternate with blocks of a rosy toile floral print. All the blocks are set on point.

The backing of the quilt is linen. The binding is a narrow fold-over early 19th century indigo print.

Size: 8 square

Age: early 19th century, probably 1830s

Origin: found in New England

Quilting: parallel rows about ½” apart with stitches at least 10 to the inch. Quilting visible in photos.

Condition: The condition is untouched, never laundered, as evidenced by the glossy glaze and original finish on the chintz and rosy toile. The overall condition is really top notch, never washed, but there is a condition problem starting in some of the chintz pieced stars. There is some loss within some stars and the batting is beginning to show, perhaps in areas no larger than a dime. The pieced stars are still all there, its just in some, near their center, there is cracking started. Given how busy the floral print chintzes are, any damage is not really visible until you examine the quilt up close. Chintz breakage is inevitable unless in museum type storage, and not of great consequence considering the age, scarcity and beauty of the quilt. It just means you should handle this rare early quilt with care.

Treat yourself to something glorious, instead of the same old same old! There is a fair reserve, so bid for this heart's desire quilt to make your holidays complete.
