Streeter Library: Important Navigation, Pacific Voyages, Cartography, Science, which consisted of an evening session on April 16 and two day sessions on April 17, was one of the landmark sales that find their way straight into the annals of the book collecting community. The Streeter Library auction gloriously exceeded expectations by doubling the high presale estimate. 16th and early 17th century travel accounts sold consistently well, with considerable attention especially paid to the many early English works. Most notable among these were Peter Martyr's The Decades of the Newe World, originally owned by Roger North who had sailed with Sir Walter Raleigh to Guiana in 1617, and the superb set of Samuel Purchas's Purchas his Pilgimes. Several important atlases achieved record prices, notably the very fine copy of Robert Dudley's Arcano del Mare and Joseph W. Wallet Des Barres's The Atlantic Neptune. |
