This is a check rendered by the Office of the Assistant Treasurer of the United States and very clearly marked Army Allotment. It is made to William H. Ballard for the sum of $32.00. It was signed by F. A. Hixon, the Paymaster of the US Army. The check was signed in Washington on August 20th 1864 in the midst of the Civil War. The inset of Columbia on the left of the check was heavily used during the Civil War Period. The etching on the right of the check is that of Edward M. Stanton, Secretary of War. It is of interest to me that his picture appears on a Treasury Department document. There is a cancelled notation in red ink which has been smeared slightly into other parts of the design. The check has been signed by Mr. Ballard on the back. The check is in good condition with minor flaws such as a punchmark under the United States which just penetrates the paper. It measures 7 3/4" x 3".
