The Atlas to Accompany the
Official Records of the Union and
Confederate Armies
The Atlas to accompany the official records of the Union and Confederate
armies is THE definative work on the Ameican Civil War when it comes to maps.
Initially issued in 37 parts between 1891 and 1895, it includes 178 plates
and constitutes the most detailed atlas ever published on the Civil War.
The maps present an especially well-balanced cartographic record of
the war because both Union and Confederate sources were used in their
compilation.
Confederate topographic engineer Jedediah Hotchkiss, for example, supplied
the editors with 123 maps for this atlas.
These are scans of the ORIGINAL maps from
the Atlas.

Horatio Nelson Taft Civil War Diaries
A collection of 3 volumes of diaries written by Horatio Nelson Taft.
The books are searchable by keyword in either the individual book or
across then entire collection at once. They are organized by date of entry.
This e-book represents three manuscript volumes, totaling over 1200
pages.
Taft was an examiner for the U. S. Patent Office. The diaries detail
events in Washington during the Civil War years including Taft's connection
with Abraham Lincoln and his family.
These volumes are especially significant because of the writers connection
to the Abraham Lincoln family and because of his descriptions of daily life
in Washington during the Civil War. The contents of these volumes provide
details about Taft's family life and various events in Washington, including
descriptions of the arrival and quartering of regiments, hospitals, and the
daily news reports (often inaccurate) of battles.
Included in the diary is a report of President Lincoln's assassination
based on accounts Taft received from friends and particularly his son, Charles
Sabin Taft, a U.S. Army surgeon who was in Ford's Theatre the night Lincoln
was shot. He was one of the physicians in attendance on Lincoln throughout
the night of April 14, 1865.

1200 Civil War Song Sheets
For most of the nineteenth century, before the advent of phonograph
and radio technologies, Americans learned the latest songs from printed song
sheets.
Not to be confused with sheet music, song sheets are single printed
sheets, usually six by eight inches, with lyrics but no music.
These were new songs being sung in music halls or new lyrics to familiar
songs, like "Yankee Doodle" or "The Last Rose of Summer." Some of America's
most beloved tunes were printed as song sheets, including "The Star Spangled
Banner" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
Song sheets are an early example of a mass medium and today they offer
a unique perspective on the political, social, and economic life of the time,
especially during the Civil War. Some were dramatic, some were humorous;
all of them had America joining together in song.
This collection contains over 1200 Civil War Song Sheets that give
a unique persepective to the attitudes of the times. |
