| CLAR: AROMATISCHE KOHLENWASSERSTOFFE/GERMAN/ RARE 1944 | AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS/CHEMISTRY/ COMPARE st $475
AROMATISCHE KOHLENWASSERSTOFFE: POLYCYCLISCHE SYSTEME [AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS: POLYCYCLICAL SYSTEM]. BY DR. ERICH CLAR. ORGANISCHE CHEMIE IN EINZELDARSTELLUNGEN [ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IN SINGLE REPRESENTATIONS], EDITED BY HELLMUT BREDERECK AND EUGEN MUELLER. Ann Arbor Michigan: J.W. Edwards, 1944. Originally published by: Berlin: Springer-Verlag, 1941. First American Edition. Text in German. Rare.
A solid copy of this rare and important work on aromatic hydrocarbons. This book was written by a German scientist who was out of favor with the German government. It was originally published in Germany during World War II, and this copy was printed in the US, probably with US government support, in 1944. This book was in the Research Library of Pfizer at Groton, and it has some institutional markings. Published mor than 60 years ago, this book is now rare, as there are no other copies of this edition listed for sale on the internet, worldwide. A later 1952 reprint is selling for $475. Another copy is not likely to come up for sale on ebay.
Translation Summary: The Chemistry of the aromatic hydrocarbons has made very large progress over the last 12 year. Although I remembered for some time to prepare this, the representation in this area of this project was not immediately carried out, if not for Mr. Eugen Muller had requested me to write a book about aromatic hydrocarbons for the collection published by Helmut Bredereck and Eugen Muller’s ‘Organic Chemistry in Single Representations.
The main value was not put on the arrangement of the material which was actually developed by a new organization and by a simplified approach. This book consists of a general and a specific part as well as all the literature that was published at the end of 1940 in the chemical central sheet. The general part of this book is dedicated to the comparison of findings of characteristics in aromatic hydrocarbons and the theories of the aromatic connection condition. Sine the latters are only in the middle of the understanding, the experimental facts were especially emphasized during the comparative representation.
According to wikipedia: "Clar wurde in Deutschböhmen geboren. (Dissertation, 1927); Aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe. Polycyclische Systeme. (1941) ; Polycyclic hydrocarbons. (1964)."
Also according to wikipedia: "An aromatic hydrocarbon (abbreviated as AH) or arene is a hydrocarbon, of which the molecular structure incorporates one or more planar sets of six carbon atoms that are connected by delocalised electrons numbering the same as if they consisted of alternating single and double covalent bonds. The term 'aromatic' was assigned before the physical mechanism determining aromaticity was discovered, and was derived from the fact that many of the compounds have a sweet scent. This sweet scent actually came from impurities in the compounds (which are not actually aromatic in the sense initially described). The configuration of six carbon atoms in aromatic compounds is known as a benzene ring, after the simplest possible such hydrocarbon, benzene. Aromatic hydrocarbons can be monocyclic or polycyclic. Some non-benzene-based compounds called heteroarenes, which follow Hückel's rule, are also aromatic compounds. In these compounds, at least one carbon atom is replaced by one of the heteroatoms oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur. Examples of non-benzene compounds with aromatic properties are furan, a heterocyclic compound with a five-membered ring that includes an oxygen atom, and pyridine, a heterocyclic compound with a six-membered ring containing one nitrogen atom..."
