Vintage Cotton Rick Rack ~ Yardage off the Spool

Marine Blue ~  A Dark Marine Blue
Approximately 1/2-5/8" inch width
(from the top of one swell to the bottom of the next)

For several years now I have been collecting rick rack - vintage, of course.  I don't know why I hoard it, I just have.  Perhaps, because a friend and I thought 'everything looks better with rick rack'... because well, it does!

The main difference between the vintage rick rack (sometimes spelled ric rac) and the 'new' rick rack of today is the fiber content.  Vintage rick rack typically was all cotton.  Whereas, the rick rack at the stores today is mostly polyester and nylon.  Yes, you have to iron cotton, but there are some stitching tricks to override this.  You will find them in the Singer Sewing Book!
(which is available in my
other listings

Rick rack was such a unique trim of yesteryear, don't you think?  Fun, happy, and it always added just the right touch to most any garment or crafty creation.  Singer even dedicated an entire page to different things you can do with it using their engineered Singer Attachments.  My friend, Julia (and her mom)at 'mytwothreads', were the very first to demonstrate rick rack fagoting insertion using the Blind Stitch Attachment... and, bless her heart, knowing how much I adore rick rack, she even helped me discover how easy it is to stitch using the Edge Stitcher as a guide.

If there is a Singer Attachment or Accessory, you can bet I will certainly try to incorporate rick rack in some way or another.  A couple years ago I demonstrated baby rick rack in the Braiding Presser Foot; and this year have shown its use in the Embroidery Guide as well as how lovely it flows through an Underbraider.  And now, as once shown in the old Machine Sewing Treatise Books, you will see rick rack demonstrated with the Multi-Slotted Binder.  It was surprisingly easy, too!

About 5/8 inch width

As many of you know, I loooooove rick rack... love it... LOVE IT!  Did you hear me?  I. LOVE. RICK RACK!  In fact, I've said how much I love it sew much that customer-stitchery-friends have surprised me in the mail with bona fide, vintage, cotton rick rack!  (I could hug you, sweet M!) And, as has been shown repeatedly, if April says "it's a lovely thing" then even the competition will follow suit and ride her rick-rack-tails!  SEW... hop quick - go through mama's and grandma's notion stash and save it!  There are so, so, so, SEW many different colors, even multi-colors that are definitely worthy of being called a Lovely Thing!

Sewing down the middle of rick rack can be eye-straining and not-sew-easy to keep straight... Well, like Julia helped me discover, you will find that the Edge-Stitcher makes for an easy guide - even for stitching on the edge . . .

. . . and even for baby rick rack!

I even trimmed the Christmas pajamas I made for myself with rick rack using the Edge Stitcher!

An old-fashioned pattern called for Rick Rack trim all the way around this little dress... I do wish I could squeeze her again at that 2-year-old age.

The Blind Stitcher can create Rick Rack Fagoting . . .

Here I demonstrate use with the Embroidery Guide and Baby Rick Rack...

And look how easily the rick rack flows through the Under Braider...

I even made Rick Rack Bias Tape and trimmed the Easter skirt for my daughter (now 4-years-old)!

And now, look at how EASY it is to apply rick rack set inside bias tape trim using the Multi-Slotted Binder.  This was entirely too much fun!

With all that said... as much as I demonstrate the use and enjoyment of rick rack I have decided to begin offering rick rack by the yard.  This particular color is high-quality vintage cotton.

Indicate how many yards you would like after you click on the buy-it-now.  If purchasing more than one yard, I will make one cut of a continuously measured piece.

Dear Friends of the Needle,

....We are friends because we all know one thing in common, that is, the joy of the needle, that little one-eyed help-meet, that will act as a vent for all those artistic feelings that demand outlet and expression in the form of making and doing things.

What a big family we are, all wielders of the little sewing needle, the knitting needle, the crochet hook and the machine needle in its multiplicity of forms, from the very fine one that will sew the gossamer frock of the little girl’s fancy dress, to the heirloom quilt, to the sturdy member that sews our leather gloves and shoes. Truly, they are one-eyed helpmeets that have added to our comforts and helped us to make progress through this busy world.

But if the machine needles had not been harnessed to good reliable instruments, so that they could work in the quickest and neatest way, they could not have done so much good, and that is why we, as needle workers, are grateful to the age-old Sewing Machine Companies for giving us that vintage instrument and in turn, giving it a beautiful setting with which to work.

We also have to be thankful for the vintage service of instruction, so that even those with basic knowledge can be taught how to make the most of their machine and its wonderful attachments.

Now you have the privilege of purchasing vintage books and instruction on how to make, mend and design, with professional tips, all of which would cost a large sum if you took lessons in the ordinary way. Here you have the written word that remains, as well as illustrations and diagrams making every point clear. It is my privilege to impart some of that knowledge to you and it is a joy to know from your letters that it has helped women in some of the loneliest corners of the world. The word “Sewing” and all it conveys is beyond description in this limited space.

My special message to you is - be a Singer Sewer and your troubles are o'er. You can have pretty, smart frocks, dainty underwear, house-linen, and little Jack and Mary can be well and comfortably dressed without encroaching too much on the family exchequer.

If you want any information on machines or obtaining service for your machine, please write to me through my About Me page and I will assist you.

In the meantime, I am going forth to continue the good work of gratifying more friends of theneedle.

As Always - Your Stitchery Friend,

April

A: I usually try to get 3-4 yards if I'm buying a trim without anything specific in mind - ample to do a child's dress with enough leftover. :)
