One of the fiercest and most respected warriors of the Lakota nation, Crazy Horse was born in 1838 in the territory of South Dakota.

Less than forty years old when he died at the hands of U.S. Army soldiers, he spent his life fighting to preserve his people's traditional way of life. In 1876, when the U.S. government decreed that all Lakota tribes return to their reservations, Crazy Horse led the resistance. At the Battle of Little Big Horn that same year, he commanded several thousand Sioux warriors in a stunning surprise victory over General Custer's forces.

This coin commemorates the proud fighting spirit of Crazy Horse, the dedicated defender of the Lakota nation. The obverse features a rendering of Crazy Horse, mounted on his war stallion and armed for battle. The reverse features a buffalo standing inside a dream catcher, a Native American cultural icon still in use today.

According to Native American legend, dream catchers - which are made by stretching a web of sinew strands across a small wooden hoop - are designed to capture only those spirits that give life to the tribe, leaving all others to pass through its small holes.
