CT-237 - 5 shillings - Pass-Co Gem CU-65 #1 Highest

CT-237 - Five shillings - Pass-Co Gem CU-65 - Connecticut Colony - July 1, 1780

A tremendous specimen that would be tough to beat. Deep ink strike, double signed, slit cancelled (very difficult to see). Extremely light hinge marks on reverse are noted but very difficult to even see. Beautiful crisp and fresh paper.

A True Rarity!
According to the PMG Census, this stunning note is the Highest grade awarded, as their highest ranking note is listed at a 64. It is a true rarity, with only six examples ever graded.

Some important history about this note:
Several anti-counterfeiting marks and symbols are littered throughout the front and reverse of this bill.
The front of the note shows the seal of the colony with three grape vines and a hand that points to the left on this denomination but to the right on others. The scroll carries the abbreviated motto "QUI TRAN SUST" (sometimes lacking the final N or final T) which means "What is transplanted survives". In the circular border is: "Connecticut State". The top shows a Horn of Plenty in both corners, with beautiful scroll designs at both right and left sides.

The back shows an elaborate woodcut design with the denomination of "Five Shillings" at center and at top. "5s" at the four corners of the design. Repeatedly dated and the words "Lawf. Money" at center.

Printed in New London by Timothy Green II with engraved borders and typeset text. (This Green is the first cousin once removed of Timothy Green Jr., who had printed currency for Connecticut until his death on October 3, 1763).

This is a very rare currency, ranked as the highest ever graded, and worthy of the world's finest collections.
