I am offering this wonderful antique pie safe. It is very nice and very practical. A bit of the 1800's that was practical then and is practical now. There are 6 punched tins on the front of this pie safe, and one drawer.
NOTE: The pie safe does not tilt, my picture does, and the boards underneath the safe are not related to the pie safe, but to a table I have.
This pie safe was originally painted white but that is long gone though you can find remains of it on the insides of the legs. The punched tins may be original, as they have been painted a silver color (not by me). This antique pie safe has a drawer and you will see the age as the wood used on the bottom of the drawer has the shrinkage found in antiques. There is a porcelain knob/latch on the front. Also has the antique feature of the hook and latch inside the pie safe to keep the door securely closed. Also, there is a wood turn piece that keeps the doors closed.
All and all, a very nice piece. I have had it in my dining room for years and it has served me well in its condition. I use it to keep crockery and serving pieces as well as tablecloths and napkins in the drawer. It measures approx. 53 1/4" tall and is about 43 1/2" wide, and 14 1/4" deep. The top piece is a bit warped, but nothing that hurts it at all as you can see in my picture. Square nails were used in its construction.
Pie safes can be hard to find as they where normally kept in the basements of homes. One interesting thing about pie saves is that the legs where placed in bowls of water to keep insects from crawling up the legs and getting to the food they kept. That is why so few survive today and many without legs.
I belive this piece to be made of poplar but I am not sure. There is no finish on it at this time....no, it is not stripped, but I left it natural. A coat of wood was (colored if you prefer) and buffing would make this beautiful and shine. Or you could varnish/shellac it or even repaint it to match your decor.
I have been asked to provide pictures of the punched tins, so here they are. All 6 punch tins match.
I am located in southern WI just about 1 hour north of Galena, Galena Territories, IL. I am also about 45 minutes NE of Dubuque, IA., and about 2 1/2 hours from Chicago.
