Ca.1850 ANTIQUE ANATOLIAN KURDISH 2-PANEL KILIM CHUVAL

LOVELY ANTIQUE EAST ANATOLIAN KURDISH "ALA-CHUVAL" FRAGMENT, Malatya area, circa: 1850, and now clean and museum conserved on a cloth backing. The exact size is: 2'-10" x 3'-5" (86 x 104 cm). A very nice old collector's specimen of a flat-weave "ala-chuval" (tent storage bag) woven by Kurdish peoples in Eastern Anatolia. The field design with "Memling-guls" is executed in sumak and weft-wrapping techniques. Wonderful shades of plant-derived natural dyes with insect-derived cochineal for the raspberry color. The ivory areas are natural white cotton. The brown color is oxidized in areas. This textile is immediately ready for a wooden stretcher for mounting or it can be displayed as is for a wall hanging. It is quite uncommon to find an example as old as this one.
