Antique circa 1882 Currier-Ives "DarkTown" Billiard Tin Box by Thomas Worth
Currier & Ives, who billed themselves as "Printmakers to the American People", are best known for scenes such as sleigh rides to grandmother's house, portraits of historical figures, and the heroics of New York firefighters, but not all their prints evoked this bucolic sensibility.
Between 1877 and 1894, the Darktown Comics arose, mostly illustrated by Thomas Worth (1834-1917) were "overtly racist" with unflattering depictions of African-American figures as coarse stereotypes in daily situations, from a day at the beach to public debates. One of the more popular sets (1882) was a simple game of billiards degenerating into general mayhem and pandemonium.
Offered here is a lidded tin box with scenes from the billiard series:
Matching side colored illustrations "Got 'Em Both"
Title of the end illustrations is unknown (if someone knows, please send a note)**
The box shows signs of wear and long use
