A white or grayish-white powder having a density of 3.4. Calcium oxide is produced by heating calcium carbonate until the carbon dioxide is driven off. Soluble in water forming calcium hydroxide. Uses include - refractory, flux in steel manufacturing, pulp and paper manufacturing, sewage treatment, poultry feeds, insecticides, sugar refining, food additive, glass and cement manufacturing. Note - the phrase 'in the limelight' was derived prior to the advent of electricity, when lime was heated by an oxyhydrogen flame, producing a brilliant white light, used in stage lighting.
