Caldwell Silver Octagonal Hand Chased Tea Chocolate Set

Here is a stunning set in the most intricately detailed chasing I have ever seen. One side of each piece is monogrammed with what appears to be the letters ESS, the cartouche on the opposite side of each piece is blank. The bottom of each piece is stamped with the BSC logo, which I believe stands for Baltimore Silver Company the predecessor of The Stieff Company, and J. E. Caldwell, most likely the retailer for this set. All are marked sterling. To see the equisite details, please CLICK on the thumbnail image (to the right of the larger photo) to supersize the image. Aside from the beautiful decoration, each piece is fashioned in an octagonal shape, which is among the more difficult forms to execute. I can find only one pinhead sized ding on the chocolate pot's cartouche -- hardly enough to mention. As far as I can see, it shows minimal signs of wear with some tarnish and light surface wear. The design is still very crisp. I would date this set to approximately 1892-1904 based upon my research (see below).

J. E. Caldwell has been in existence since 1839 as a retailer of fine goods in Philadelphia. Charles Stieff created the Baltimore Sterling Silver Company in 1892 and in 1904 he bought out his partners and renamed it to The Stieff Company. This would date this set to some time between 1892 and 1904 if I am correct about the maker. I have not been able to find this exact BSC logo to corroborate this so please feel free to email if you have additional information.

Chocolate Pot  9  3/4 inches tall to the top of the handle -- weight 22 ounces

Cream Jug  4  3/16 inches tall to the top of the rim  -- weight 8.2 ounces

Waste or sugar bowl  3  7/16 inches tall to the top of the rim  -- weight  7.6 ounces

All weights per my postal scale -- total weight approximately 37 ounces
