Hard to believe that it's getting to be that time of year again already but October is nearly kaput and November and the Holiday season right around the corner. It won't be too much longer and most of us will be thinking about getting Christmas decorations out. I thought perhaps it would be a good time to carve and list a new Christmas tree pin, the first of the year. I usually make a couple each year, all one of a kind pieces and a few of which have been pictured in collectors books. My newest Christmas tree is carved from some very lovely and special bakelite colors. Starting with the tree's base color, this is an awesome emerald green colored vintage gold dust bakelite. This is a rare mixture of bakelite that I've rarely seen and is truly gorgeous as light plays on the glittering flakes inside the material. Into the base I've inlaid ball shaped ornaments which are carved from yellow-amber colored bakelite and a very dark blue bakelite, both of which are also stardust material but it doesn't show up quite so well as in the green. The tree's trunk is carved from marbled brown bakelite and the star on top is amber colored apple juice bakelite which I've backed with gold foil and then inlaid into a pale off-white bakelite circle that represents the rays of light from the star. As light hits the gold leaf behind the apple juice star, it looks quite like there is a light on inside. I used a bit of black enamel to enhance the shadows and finer details. Onto the back I've secured a nickel silver pin component and inscribed my signature and the date as well. The pin measures just a wee bit more than 3 inches tall and hangs very nicely when worn.
