Ootsu-e
Ootsu-e began to be painted as Butsuga, Buddhist painting, in Oomi (current Shiga prefecture in Japan) in early Edo era, as one of expression of Buddhist's belief. After that, it turned to be Sezoku-ga, popular painting, and in about 18th century, it began to take on moral and ironical caracter. In Ootsu-e, gods and Buddha, people and animals are depicted with humorous touch along with Douka, religious and moral short poems.

This work had been inspired by Japanese proverb, "Hold the catfish by gourd", which means "elusive" and "making no sense" as catfish cannot be easily caught by gourd. The child depicted in bold and energetic lines has a Sakazuki, Japanese cup for Sake. Simple but giving a strong impression as if energy spills out, which is the character of Minga, Japanese popular paint. Humorous work having childishness that raises familiality and affection.

Medium browning. One of scroll tips broken.
