RARE Cdv Photo of GRAND DUCHESS MARIA ALEXANDROVNA of RUSSIA & her husband c1870’s: A cdv photo of Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. She was born in 1853 the second daughter of Alexander II Emperor of Russia and his wife Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine. In 1874 she married Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, 4th son of Queen Victoria and became Duchess Marie of Edinburgh. He was prone to bouts of heavy drinking and had an evil temper so exasperating that she was relieved when he went back to sea. Nevertheless, the couple had five children. She died in 1920 The cdv is an advertisement carte for the Goldsmiths Art Union. It was taken by the Stereoscopic Co of London.
