Cerwin Vega
W15P
Auction Consists of :
1 Cerwin Vega W15P 15 4 Ohm Woofer
Gene Czerwinski was a brilliant aerospace engineer who had a passion for music. During the day he would design sophisticated sonar and guidance systems for Bendix Pacific Corp. and at night he would build sophisticated speakers and audio equipment in his garage. As more and more audiophiles found out about his superior equipment he resigned his day job and established Vega and Associates, which ultimately became Cerwin Vega, to keep up with the demand.
Throughout the late 50s and 60s Gene Czerwinski was a driving force in the hi-fi, movie theater sound & musical instrument amplification industries. In 1957, Cerwin-Vega introduced the worlds first solid state hi-fi component power amplifier rated at 125 watts RMS. The amplifiers circuit was inspired by a 10,000 watt sonar amp Gene had designed for Bendix Pacific Corp., and featured the first transformer-free output stage found in a home hi-fi amplifier. Cerwin-Vega was also a supplier of loudspeakers and system designs to many major manufacturers; including Fender, Acoustic, Sunn and Vox. In the early 70s Cerwin Vega was contracted by Lucasfilms to design theater surround sound systems and they were involved in the landmark servo subwoofer system introduced by Infinity. In 1974 Cerwin Vega was awarded an Academy Award for special technical achievement for their "Double E" bass horns used in the Sensurround theater sound system.
It wasnt until the 80s that Cerwin Vega became a household name. They shifted their efforts to consumer speaker systems and introduced a whole new generation to Hi-fidelity sound. Cerwin Vega systems set new standards in clarity and depth of bass response, width of dynamic range, and achievement of the highest output level. They shook up the stagnant home and auto speaker industry and immediately became the most popular speaker manufacturer of the modern era.
The W15P was one of Cerwin Vega most rugged and musical 15 woofers. It was developed for professional applications and is a bit more robust then the consumer type woofers. As you can see the surrounds are of the heavy pleated fabric type, not foam. It features a die cast frame, enormous magnet, and 2 voice coil. It can handle anything thrown at it. It renders bass tones with absolute power and authority, yet is equally capable of displaying all the subtle details in the low ranges. Erwin Vega also used this woofer in some of their hi-end consumer speakers such as the PD-9.
