Charles Dickens, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, 1st Edition, Mixed State – Good/None.
Book Description: London, Chapmann and Hall, 1839., 1839. 8vo. XVI, 624 pp. Illustrated throughout with 39 plates by Phiz, plus a frontispiece by Finden (all present and intact) including "Nicholas Astonishes Mr. Squeers and Family", the plate facing page 116. The first edition book is of a mixed state with the following features: "latter" has not been corrected to "letter" in the sixth line from the bottom of page 160. The "Chapman & Hall" imprint is present at the bottom of the first two plates, which Eckel claims were omitted in later impressions. However, "visiter" has been corrected to "sister" in the seventeenth line of page 123. Features the half-title and the list of plates. There is a tasteful inscription inside “John Landeman Tulloch 1840” at the top of the half title. Tops of the leaves are darker than others, but no color is discernable. The binding of the book is solid and the pages are in good condition. The front board has separation from the spine, but is in tact. The exterior boards are marble with leather accents. The exterior boards are complete but the covering shows heavy wear on on surfaces and extremities. The pages have toning from age. The plates show foxing. The edges are marbled, with plain cream endpapers. An important copy that would make a fine addition to any collector's library.
