Description

The Charleston Rice Spoon is English silver plated and is engraved on the back "S/C England".   It is 14" long.  It also comes with an anti-tarnish felt pouch depicting the Royal Crown, K&M  and the Royal Lion Emblem, A-1 Silver Plate. This collectible rice spoon was purchased new in the early 1990s and has never been used.  This is an elegant item to add to your fine silver collection. It also comes with the original history of the spoon printed on paper reading as follows:

"The Charleston Rice Spoon

This lovely reproduction is a copy of the spoons used in the stately dining rooms of Charleston’s mansions during the 18th century, when South Carolina’s coastal plains were the major producers of rice in the New World. This handsome accessory is still used as a rice serving implement, and recalls a tradition of gracious dining.  Charles Kerrison and Co., Jewelers".

In addition, The Charleston Rice Spoon has been a tradition in the South since the first settlers arrived in the Lowcountry. This oversized spoon was also used in England as a stuffing spoon. Because rice was a major crop in the Lowcountry, southern planters adapted its use to the serving of rice at the Charleston, South Carolina  "two o'clock dinner." Today the rice spoon is a symbol of the Southern heritage.
