Originally formed in New York City in 1970 as The Boys, and later known as The Big Apple Band, they played numerous downtown gigs, but despite considerable interest in their demos, they could not land a recording contract for many years due to the institutionalized discrimination of the day which held that blacks could not play rock music.
This is their second album, which contains their classic chart-topping hit Le Freak as well as the song which would go on to become their anthem, Chic Cheer.
It is interesting to note that Le Freak was originally written as an impromptu protest song after some of the band members were refused entry into New York City's fabled Studio 54 nightclub. The famous refrain "aaaw, freak out!" was originally written as "aaaw, f**k off!" but the band changed the lyrics for obvious reasons once they realized they had another hit on their hands. The song became a massive success, topping the singles charts. It would go on to become the best-selling single ever produced by Atlantic, as well as it's parent company Warner - a distinction which the song continues to hold to this very day.
