Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad - 1942 - Large Sign

Here is an original Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad placard 14” x 11” heavy cardstock – cardboard style sign that has the printing date of 17th, 1942 on it. This sign was used to place on the sides of freight cars carrying hazardous materials, which the transportation of such items by rail was the usual method of transportation during World War II.

The sign is completely original and is authentic. I have had this sign in my collection for at least 18 years and have just now decided to part with it. It was acquired from a collection from a retired C&EI railroad employee in the Southern Indiana area.

The sign is also marked in the upper right hand corner with the C&EI form number of : Form C.T. 134 Rev. The placard has nine (9) rules on it that were to be ad heard to while the car was loaded and being handled during classification, interchange, and while in transit.

The sign is in very good condition, but does have some light discoloration around the sides and there is a light crease in the upper left and middle left area. But otherwise, it looks great!

During the era that this sign was made and used, the C&EI served the towns / cities of St. Louis and Chaffee Missouri; Englewood, Chicago Heights, Momence, Watseka, Woodland, Cissna Park, Willa Grove, Tuscola, Arthur, Findlay, Pana, Nokomis, Granite City, Danville, Salem, Mount Vernon, Benton, Marion, Cypress, Joppa, and Altamont Illinois; Cayuga, Hillsdale; Clinton, Brazil, and Terre Haute. After the acquision of the Evansville & Terre Haute in 1911, Sullivan, Vincennes, Princeton, Fort Branch, and Evansville Indiana also fell under the C&EI’s service area.
