This is the first full-length novel by JRR Tolkien published since The Silmarillion in 1977. Thirty years is a long time to wait! The story dates back to Tolkien's personal writings just after the First World War. After The Lord of the Rings was written, Tolkien greatly expanded the story, and it "became the the dominant story in his later work on Middle-earth." At his death, JRR Tolkien's story remained unfinished in fragments, but his son was able, "after long study of the manuscripts," to construct "a coherent narrative without any editorial invention." [quotes from Christopher Tolkien's Introduction] Tolkien lovers who have struggled through the History of Middle-earth series edited by Christopher will be delighted to know that the story is presented uninterrupted by notes and commentary. Tolkien scholars will, on the other hand, be pleased that an Appendix is included giving a detailed history of the manuscripts.

*The U.S. Trade Edition is published by Houghton Mifflin and has a full printing code line toward the bottom of the copyright page. The dust jacket is priced at $26.00 at the top of the front flap with 0407 at the bottom. See pictures below. This book has already been re-printed several times.
