Gao Jianfu (1879-1951) Gao Jianfu was acclaimed as one of the "Three Masters of the Lingnan School". In his early years, Gao learned painting with Ju Lian before going to Japan to continue his studies, where he was influenced by the Japanese master Takeuchi Seiho. Commonly known as the "Five-Storey Pavilion", the historical building in Guangzhou that is the subject of this painting was originally a watchtower built on the city wall in the 14th century. Destroyed and rebuilt many times over the subsequent six hundred years, it was in ruins in 1926 when Gao completed this hanging scroll. Executed with vigorous and rough brushstrokes that differ from traditional techniques, it also features atmospheric effects that Gao learned during his time in Japan , and he depicts the building at sunset to express the melancholy evoked in him by thoughts of decay and the passing of time.
