From textiles such as carpets, silks, and tapestries to ceramics and furniture, this early out-of-print book provides an in-depth survey of the impact this style had on Western art and decoration. “In the first part of this book Oliver Imprey traces the trade between East and West that over the centuries brought exotic goods to Europe. The high price and comparative scarcity of such imports quickly led to imitations – both in Europe and America. Moreover, in the course of trading, the ultimate origin of the imported object was often forgotten, which led the European designers and craftsmen to mix in discriminating motifs, patterns and materials drawn from totally different oriental countries – China, Persia or India. It is these imitations, so often wildly inaccurate and fanciful, which came to be known as ‘Chinoiserie,” and in the second and larger section of the book the author examines and discusses the chief categories of applied art influenced by the style – furniture, textiles, garden design, ceramics, etc. With the authoritative text and sumptuous illustrations CHINOISERIE provides an integrated account of the style and its place in the history of oriental influences on European art.”
