The shade garden, protected by a statue of Saint Francis, is starting to make its appearance.  The hostas are just beginning to grow, sending up an advance guard of short, lime green sprouts.  This Solomon Seal is a garden star from spring through fall--sprouts, leaves, blooms--all gracefully curving in an ordered pattern.

This 12" x 12" oil painting is on paper (Arches Lavis Fidelis cas-en-tout) that has been prepared with gesso.  Oil paint is applied impasto with a rag; lines are scratched into the surface with a drawing tool--pencil, palette knife, etc.  Melted crayon on some of the paintings uses drips to create hard-edged shapes.  All materials are archival and long-wearing, will not yellow or fade.  The painting ships signed, dated and is presented with a black 1" mat and foam core backing board.

Christine Drake graduated from New York University with a masters degree in Studio Art.  She has taught drawing, printmaking and design to both university students and adults.  Her work has been exhibited across the United States at such venues as the Anchorage Museum of Art, the Edward Hopper Museum, the Maryland Federation of Art, King Regional Art Museum, and the Art Museum of Western Virginia.  International venues include Beijing, Istanbul, Ottawa, and York, England. Images of her work are archived in New York at the Museum of Modern Art and The Drawing Center. She has worked professionally doing illustrations for corporate brochures, curating group exhibitions and public art projects, and lecturing on current art trends.  Christine lives and works in Lexington, Virginia.
