We believe this chest/desk to be American made due to its use of pine and quarter sawn white oak as secondary woods. We also believe it was constructed in the first half of the 1800's due to the craftsmanship and lack of any circular saw marks. We do not imply that it was used in the Civil War, however we beleive it was constructed prior to the war and therefore could have been used in it. Please email for more photos and ask any questions before bidding. The fact that it is very small and lightweight, yet two pieces and the fact that we researched dozens of web pages and hundreds of desks/secretaries and found nothing even similar in size and portability - led us to believe it is a campaign chest. Page 95 of Millers International Antiques Price Guide (2001) confirmed our belief. There you will find several Military chests approx. the same size, nearly all on small turned feet, some Mahogany at least one w/ Ebony inlay. The desk is signed 2 times, we believe by the maker. Once under the shelf-on top of the box- maybe in the veneer glue? And again on the back of the shelf. The drawer handles have been replaced, the originals could have held the name of the officer. It is beautifully constructed of Mahogany and Mahogany veneer with Ebony inlay. Large hand-cut blind dovetails were used on the front and back of the drawer and even the top and bottom of the case. The top shelf unit has Ebony string inlay across the center of each shelf and up the center of each side. It is solid Mahogany w/ the exception of the back which is Mahogany veneer over pine. The shelf is positioned over two pegs on top of the case. The drawer face and the top (when closed) have a geometric Fluer-de-lis like Ebony inlay. Quarter sawn white oak was used as the drawers secondary wood. It has "stops" attached to its underside, accessible through two small holes in the dust board, that position it perfectly tp support the flip top writing surface. Under the flip top there is green felt flanked by two recessed compartments. We believe one is for pens and the other for inkwells and stamps. One of the Mahogany covers may be a replacement. Behind the ebony banded doors is an adjustable (4 position) slide in-out shelf supported by angular cuts in either side of the case. The left door has top and bottom brass locking pins -which are square. The turned feet are capped with a 1" brass ball for a total of 4 ½". Overall approx dimensions are as follows. Total height 47", width 30", 17" depth, and approx 29" to top of case. There are a couple of old repairs, tape underneath drawers, a small amount of veneer damage and a few replaced screws. But this is still piece is an outstanding piece of craftsmanship and more than likely one of a kind. We purchased this desk from an estate in Millbrook NY that contained many fine & period furnishings. We reserve the right to end the auction at any time as it is for sale in our shop. We also welcome pickup or inspection, any evening or weekend. We are located 90 miles north of NYC in Dutchess County NY. 12501. WE WILL SUBTRACT OR REFUND $300 FROM PURCHASE PRICE FOR ANYONE WHO PICKS THIS DESK UP THEMSELVES. We can also deliver within 100 miles at no additional charge. We will transport this fine piece to Arnoff Shipping in Lakeville CT who will ship anywhere in the continental USA via UPS and other shipping services. My guess is it weighs approx 65 lbs. Thanks.
