Original Art from Clarence Major
You are bidding on an original piece of mixed media art from Clarence Major from his own personal collection. You'll be able to take pride that this work is coming to you from the artist; we are merely handling the listing and packaging of this artwork on his behalf.
Dancer in Wide Dress is mixed media on paper 30 inches high and 22 inches wide. It is signed "Major" in the lower right and dated "2002". The title is featured on the reverse side in pencil. This is a portrait, done in black, browns, muted greens and vibrant yellow.
"Clarence Major has a remarkable mind and the talent to match." — Toni Morrison
From his first public showings in the 1950's at the Carnegie Institute Gallery in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and the Gayle Gallery, Chicago, Major has continued to explore and expand his art. In his own words: "I want an art that will both give me contentment and at the same time challenge me — a dynamic art. I go through periods when my work is figurative, then all landscapes or interiors or still lifes — often in a neo-expressionist mode. Painting is the most important activity in my life."
Clarence Major's paintings have been seen in many galleries, in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and Chicago, and elsewhere. The Kresge Art Museum, in Michigan (in 2001) and the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts in Florida (in 2002) held one-person shows of his paintings; and his work is in the permanent collections of both the Schacknow and the Hamilton Club Gallery museum in New Jersey. His paintings are also in many private collections in America and Europe. Books about his art (and writings) are Bernard Bell's Clarence Major and His Art (2001) and Nancy Bunge's Conversations with Clarence Major (2002). His forthcoming book of poems about art, Myself Painting, (LSU Press, (Oct. 2008) focuses on his working method.
Although he is clearly an artist that has gone far in his career, the full impact of Major's art within the art world and our culture at large is still unknown. Now is the time to find one of his works that speaks to you and collect it while you have the chance.
The art will be shipped in a durable mailing tube, and the shipping charges include insurance and delievery confirmation.
