This featured reverse (back) of the Dollar has a soaring American Bald Eagle, our nation's symbol.  It is encircled by 17 stars - one for each State in the Union at the time of the 1804 Lewis & Clark Expedition. 

The Golden Dollar's obverse (front) portrays Sacagawea, a Shoshone Native American young woman.  On her back, she carries her infant son, Jean Baptiste, born on the Lewis & Clark Expedition.  Sacagawea's knowledge of several Indian languages and her familiarity with the topography of the territory was crucial to the success of the Expedition.
