OWN A PIECE OF HISTORY THAT CHANGED
THE MUSIC RECORDING INDUSTRY
The winner of this Compact Disc will have an actual prototype that helped launch a historic revolution in the music industry. It is one of a very limited number of Compact Disc prototypes made by the innovative efforts of engineers from the Sony and Phillips companies. Here is the history of this CD from its current owner, Mr. Len Meisel:
"In the summer of 1980, I had the privilege of being among the first people in the United States to ever listen to a Digital Compact Disc. As a sales manager for Sony Hi Fi, I was on assignment to help the Sony engineers from Japan set up at the Consumer Electronics show in Chicago.
Sony Corporation, in conjunction with Phillips Consumer Electronics, designed, engineered, and offered their Compact Disc format to the electronics industry. Their ultimate goal was to convince the consumer electronics industry to use their format as the industry standard. This is the actual Digital Compact Disc played at the convention and heard for the first time in the USA.
Listening to the CD made me instantly question whether my favorite record albums, played on the highest quality turntable I could get my hands on, would sound better if recorded in Digital Compact Disc. The lack of background noise [s/n ratio], and the dynamic range of the “Piano Concerto” by Grieg [performed by Hiroko Nakamura] was fantastic! It was hard to imagine that within three years, Compact Discs would start replacing records as the music industry’s primary recording medium.
Included with the CD are two promotional pieces -- a booklet and brochure introducing this prototype Compact Disc to the public. These 4-color presentations are in mint to near-mint condition.
This disc and the two brochures were a major leap ahead for the world’s recording history. Sony Corporation followed with a longer playing format which gained worldwide acceptance.
Look at your friend’s faces when you allow them to hold the first Compact disc ever displayed and heard in the USA!”
